Asso. Prof. Kweku Safo-Ankama is a talented textile artist with excellent background training, experience and exposure in Textiles, Art Education and Arts and Culture. He was born on 17th October, 1979 to Mr. and Mrs. B.E. Ankama of Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. He started his education at the Specialist Training College Demonstration Primary School (now University of Education Practice School). For his secondary education, he attended Mfantsipim School where he studied Visual Art. He then enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science And Technology (KNUST) where he graduated with a B.A. Industrial Art (Textile option).
In 2004, he enrolled for a Masters degree programme in Art Education at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He successfully completed the programme in 2006. Still poised for further academic laurels, he enrolled to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy programme in Arts and Culture at the University of Education, Winneba. He successfully graduated with a PhD in Arts and Culture. The trainings he received at these universities equipped him with theoretical and industrial training in Textiles. This was helpful when he had the opportunity to undertake an industrial training with Ghana Textiles Manufacturing Company (G.T.M.C.), where he gained excellent supervisory skills.
In 2003, he undertook his National Service at T. I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region of Ghana. He has taught Textiles and Visual Art in some second cycle institutions in Ghana. These are: S.D.A Secondary School, (Head of Visual Art Dept.) from 2006-2007, Kumasi Anglican Secondary School, (Visual Art Teacher [Teaching Practice – 2005]), Kings College (Visual Art and General Knowledge in Art Teacher), T. I. Ahamadiyya Secondary School, Gomoa Potsin (Visual Art Teacher, 2003-2004). In 2007, he became a lecturer in the Industrial Art Department at the then Takoradi Polytechnic.
In 2012, he became the Head of Department for Textile Design and Technology. He served diligently for three consecutive terms. During the period as a lecturer, he took part in exhibitions, research and published a host of refereed articles both locally and internationally. This resulted in his promotion to the rank of a Senior Lecturer in June 2014. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2020. He is currently the Director for Institute of Distance Learning and Continuing Education.
