The Vice Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, TTU, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, says TTU has embraced the Precision Quality teaching principles to aid its curriculum as a measure to produce industry relevant technical professionals who prioritize quality standards. Rev. Prof. Eshun said this when TTU signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with Design and Technology Institute, DTI, to strengthen the implementation of Precision Quality training programme towards improving Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, at the university.

In the spirit of the already established working relationship between DTI and TTU, DTI also handed over a refurbished Sculpture Studio equipped at a cost of GH¢200,000 to TTU. The Vice Chancellor of TTU expressed appreciation for the gesture by DTI.

“Takoradi Technical University has a vision of becoming a world-class Technical University recognized for excellence, innovation and societal relevance. This laudable vision cannot be realized without the industry collaborations…This MoU has led to capacity training for the staff of TTU in Precision Quality, PQ. In all 35 staff of TTU were trained in Precision Quality Curriculum with the cost of training borne by DTI. I express my utmost appreciation to the CEO of DTI for taking 70 % of the total cost of the refurbishing of the Sculpture Studio”, he said.

Rev. Prof. Eshun was also expectant of what the MoU on Precision Quality curriculum will bring to TTU’s graduates and industry.

“I have strong conviction that this MoU will go a long way to address the issue of Precision Quality facing our manufacturing industry today so far as international quality standards are concerned. I also believe this project will offer job opportunities to our students and make them competitive in the world of work. I however appeal to our industrial partners to also come on board to collaborate with us in order to meet the expectations of industry. I believe when this is done, we would address the issue of unemployment of the teeming graduates in our country“, he added.

Chief Executive Officer and Founder of DTI, Constance Elizabeth Swaniker speaking at the MoU signing said it forms part of DTI’s collaborative strategy to work with stakeholders to reach the objective under the ‘Transforming youth TVET livelihood for sustainable jobs’ project in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation’s ‘Young Africa Work strategy’. This she said seeks to enable 3,000 young people, particularly women to access dignified and fulfilling work opportunities by 2030.

“The three-year project seeks to create 40,000 direct and indirect work opportunities for the youth, especially young women, through TVET. Under this project, DTI will recruit and train 1,000 youth in Precision Fabrication and work readiness, improve the work skills and practices of 5,000 master craft persons and 1,000 SMEs through the Precision Quality training programme. Five thousand students and 100 instructors in selected TVET Universities will also benefit from the training programme which will benefit many young apprentices in trade and businesses.“, she said.

Madam Swaniker also expressed optimism with the benefits the Precision Quality curriculum it handed over to TTU will bring to skill development.

“The PQ curriculum will help position and equip young people with the requisite skills to create value and secure better jobs in the future. The handing over of the curriculum to the University is therefore a major step to ensuring that we maintain the same level of standards in TVET education delivery across the country…At DTI, we are on a journey to work with stakeholders to nurture and develop the next generation of human capital to champion Ghana’s economic growth by adhering to industry standards”, she added.

Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, who graced the MoU signing as well as the refurbished Sculpture studio handing over events commended TTU for taking the appropriate steps worthy of a university representing the region.

“Since the best always comes from the West, Takoradi Technical University has been unequivocal in its vision of becoming ‘a world-class Technical University recognized for excellence, innovation and societal relevance’…As the biggest Technical University in Ghana, TTU has a huge burden by leading the way towards transforming TVET in Ghana and creating jobs. To do this, TTU will need partners and it is very heart-warming the partnership that TTU is developing with DTI. Partnerships can foster innovation and provide safe convening grounds for ideas to germinate. Partnerships may bring new skills, talents and ways of doing business in close proximity to each other and partnerships represent the place where academia and industry can meet and create an ecosystem that drives change and fosters innovation. That is why the collaboration between Takoradi Technical University and Ghana’s only accredited private TVET provider, the Design and Technology Institute, DTI, is such an exciting partnership with huge potential.“, he said.

All the 35 staff of TTU who have already undergone training in the Precision Quality Curriculum were presented with certificates.

DTI out-doored the Precision Quality (PQ) programme to policy makers, Academia and key industry players at a conference in Accra on 11th February 2021. At the conference, stakeholders agreed that Precision Quality will be key to enhancing the skills and work of master craft persons and artisans to meet global industry standards.

A Training of Trainers, ToT, workshop was also organized from 29th March to 2nd April for 12 Academic and Business Scale Advisors from Ho, Kumasi and Accra. The workshop equipped participants with the requisite knowledge and skills in Precision Quality ahead of the PQ training programme to Mastercraft Persons, SMEs, and Students from selected TVET Universities. The PQ training programme was certified by the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, CTVET, for introduction into the academic studies of technical Universities.
